Let me have one political rant real quick

As a self proclaimed children’s author, I look up to and admire a whole bunch of other Australian children’s authors and have a huge amount of respect for them. I also follow them on social media and it just so happens that they are all left wing, tree hugging rainbow hippies who hate Tony Abbott. And that’s fine, I love that about them. It just means I have to put up with their political opinions every damn time I go online. But that’s neither here nor there.

Lately, they’ve all been moaning about budget cuts to the ABC and I thought this would be a great opportunity for me to finally chime into the political landscape armed with as much knowledge of it as my children’s author peers (none).

So, here is an open letter to our Prime Minister Tony Abbott about the recent ABC cuts. Tony, if you could help me out by responding someway, I really feel that would greatly help cement my “children’s author” status.

Books In Homes party at Paxton Public School

Author visits school for books in homes

Books In Homes is my favourite organisation in the world. Not only do they give much needed books to school kids, but they also send me to visit schools around NSW Australia to talk about my favourite things... reading and writing.

My visit to Kitchener Public School in NSW

I had the coolest day today. I got to visit some of the most incredible kids in Australia at Kitchener Public School in NSW. The visit was organised by the lovely people at Books In Homes Australia.

For those of you who may not be aware, Books In Homes is an initiative to get kids reading by giving away books to school kids. i.e. putting Books In Homes. Could there be any greater initiative? I think not.

So what did we get up to you ask? Well, I got to have a chat to all the kids at their school assembly (Being a Remembrance Day assembly made the occasion all the more special).

My message was pretty simple... and that message was this... Anyone can be an author if they want to be. All you need to do is make sure you pay attention in school and show respect to your teachers. Being an author is one of the funnest jobs in the world too. What could be more fun than making up weird stories?

I got to talk to them about the importance of reading and writing, I got to read them one of my very own stories AANND I got to field some very intelligent questions.

To top it all off, and to prove that anyone can be an author, the kids will all be writing their own stories and sharing it on this blog! So stay tuned to see them come through :) I can already tell that there will be several famous authors coming out of Kitchener Public School.

I would like to take this opportunity to send out a big thank you to the lovely staff and parents for being so warm and welcoming me at their school. And to all the kids, thank you for being so cool and listening to what I had to say... Remember, anyone can be an author if they really want to be. I can’t wait to read all your stories!

My pet rock Belroc

Let me tell you about my pet rock. His name is Belroc and he is really cool. Me and my brother found him at Merewether beach Australia in the Summer of 2013. He was sitting all by himself overlooking the blue ocean swell and contemplating some seriously deep notions of time travel and intergalactic religion. All the other rocks at the beach were being complete bastards to him, acting all passive aggressive and shit. But Belroc didn't pay any attention to them.

Some would argue that Belroc had brought all this animosity on himself. He has a very hard exterior and doesn't interact well with others. But me and my bro saw right past that superficial nonsense and saw that Belroc indeed had a soft side to him. He was warm, caring and never judged anyone. So we adopted him.

For those who accuse him of having no personality, well, I beg to differ. Belroc, like all of us, has his own hopes, fears, dreams and aspirations. But if you don’t spend time with him... If you don’t get to know him... Then you will never know what they are. For example, did you know his favourite actor is Dwayne Johnson? That his celebrity hall pass is Emma Stone? That his favourite band is HE IS LEGEND because they rock harder than anyone else? Or that his favourite film is The Rock, starring Nicholas Cage and Sean Connery?

My book is going to be in the Hollywood film Anesthesia

One of my books is headed to the big screen sometime in the not too distant future. Romy’s Garden Adventures: Christmas City is going to star as a background prop in the upcoming film Anesthesia - written and directed by Tim Blake Nelson.

The film stars Hollywood heavyweights Glenn Close, Kristen Stewart, Gretchen Mol and Jessica Hecht just to name a few. The plot focuses on intersecting relationships after the violent mugging of a university professor. So, in many ways, the film plot parallels Romy’s Christmas tale. However, in many more ways, it doesn’t.

Still, it makes me laugh to think that there is a chance that any one of those Hollywood stars possibly picked up my book on set, flipped through it and thought to themselves “What in the actual fuck is this piece of shit children’s book doing on the set of this awesome movie?”

Regardless of what their opinions may be of my flailed attempts at creatively expressing myself, it is an extreme honour for me to have a simple children's book I wrote immortalised on the big screen alongside some people I massively admire.

And may I just say, if you are reading this, and you are a film Producer, Director or just someone who manages props on set or whatever, I just want to state here and now, that you have 100% all my permission to use any of my books in the background of any of your films in the future. ESPECIALLY if Kristen Stewart is starring in it. Yehw!

The film is scheduled for release sometime before the end of the year. Here’s some pics of my book in action. She is a natural talent ;)

Marty McFly IS Dr Emmett Brown

Woah. Okay. I feel I need to somehow vent this brain wave that just exploded in my head. I need to put this idea down on paper to be able to re-evaluate whether or not I’m going crazy.

Getting paid for writing books

This week has been a good week. I got paid close to $1500 in royalties for sales of my story Animal Friends: Floating Orange Cubes. At the start of the year, the book hit the Amazon charts after a reddit AMA I did hit the front page. Kids all around the world ended up checking it out. Even this guy had a read.

Sequel to Animal Friends coming soon

I probably shouldn’t say coming soon, but yeh, it’s coming... it will most likely be ready around Christmas 2014. I’m going to look for a publisher to get this book in to stores across Australia, but rest assured if no publisher is interested, I shall release the book myself.

Now Accepting Bitcoins

As you may be aware, I am now accepting Bitcoins as payment for some of the children’s books I have made. The point of this post is to tell you a little about why I decided to accept this magical internet currency and to educate other authors as to what Bitcoins are and how they too can go about accepting them on their website as payment for the stories they have created.

MJ Editing Services REVIEW

Being fairly new to the whole writing children’s stories thing, I was quite oblivious to the importance of having a good editor up until the dying moments of launching my book. I had written my story, had my brother do a first draft edit / read through, gathered illustrations and was planning on launching the book within a matter of weeks.
